General Systems Questions
The Coravin Wine Preservation System allows you to pour wine from a bottle without removing the cork. Whether you want a sip, a glass, or more, your last glass will always taste just as amazing as your first – even weeks, months, or years later. Coravin has also developed a Screw Cap accessory that enables wine lovers to enjoy and preserve bottles sealed with a screw cap for up to three months.
The Coravin Wine Preservation System is easy to use – just insert, tip, and pour. Place the Coravin Wine Preservation System on top of the bottle and push the needle through the cork. Coravin works on all cork-sealed, still wines. Tip the bottle as if you are pouring from an open bottle. Quickly press the trigger to pressurize the bottle. Release the trigger to pour into your glass. Tip the bottle back up to stop the pour. Remove the needle by pulling the system straight up. The cork will reseal naturally and continue to protect your wine for weeks, months, or even years.
The Coravin System leverages patented technology that allows you to pour a glass of wine without removing the cork. Whether you are a wine lover or wine professional, there is a Coravin for you. Please refer to this helpful chart to compare Systems..
Coravin routinely conducts blind taste tests with wine professionals of bottles previously accessed with the Coravin System against control bottles from the same case. Over 500 wine professionals have participated in these tastings. They have not been able to distinguish between previously accessed bottles and untouched controls. Leading restaurants around the world now trust their wine by the glass program to the Coravin System.
Other wine preservation systems require the cork to be pulled. This allows oxygen to mix with the wine and starts the process of oxidation. Coravin Systems pour wine without removing the cork, so oxygen never touches the wine in the bottle, allowing it to stay protected for months and years.
When the Coravin System is used correctly, the wine in the bottle continues to evolve in the same way as if Coravin was never used.
Please refer to this helpful chart for guidance on closures.
The Coravin System works only as well as the cork that is closing the bottle. If the cork in the bottle is of poor quality it is likely that the cork will not effectively protect the wine. This is true regardless of whether you use the Coravin System or not.
Unfortunately the quality of cork varies. It depends upon when and where it was harvested as well as manufacturing techniques. Over time, corks can become brittle, dry and fragile, especially when a bottle is not stored properly.
We recommend storing your wine bottles on their side, in a temperature controlled environment suitable for wine. Ensure the wine covers the cork surface inside the bottle so the cork does not dry out.
For chilled wines, the cork may take a bit longer to reseal, usually within a minute. Keep these standing vertically until the cork has resealed.
All Coravin Wine Systems are permitted during air travel without Coravin Capsule. However the Coravin Capsules are prohibited due to TSA restrictions and will be confiscated if traveling through an airport in the US. Restrictions vary by country.
Coravin Capsules can be ordered here, for shipment directly to your destination.
Shipping compressed gas capsules requires special handling and packaging. Unless you are certified to ship compressed gas you will not be able to ship. Coravin uses compliant procedures and packing materials to properly ship Coravin Capsules around the world. We will be happy to ship to your desired location.

CORAVIN PURE CAPSULES
Coravin Pure Capsules power all Coravin Wine Preservation Systems, by pressurizing an unopened bottle of wine with Argon gas to pour a sip, a glass, or more. But not all Argon gas is born equal. Only Coravin Pure Capsules utilize our proprietary Four Point Purity Process. Each Capsule pours about 15, 5 ounce glasses of wine.
Each Coravin Capsule will allow you to pour approximately 15, 5 ounce glasses of wine (equivalent to 75 ounces). Capsule longevity will vary depending on how you use the Coravin System and how often and how much you pressurize each bottle.
Yes, all Coravin Systems use the same Coravin Capsules.
No. It is important to only use official Coravin Capsules with your Coravin System. Coravin Capsules are specially designed to work with the Coravin System to ensure safe operation and optimal preservation of your wine.
WARNING: Gas Capsules are under high pressure. The Coravin System is designed to work ONLY with genuine Coravin Capsules. Use of non-Coravin capsules, re-use of any part of the Capsule, or connection to sources of gas other than Coravin Capsules is dangerous and may cause injury to users or others nearby. Use of large capacity gas sources with the Coravin System can result in gas leaks which could cause serious injury or death. Large capacity gas sources are NEITHER tested NOR approved by Coravin. The use of alternative gas sources will void the System warranty and remove all responsibility of Coravin from any issues or injury that may arise. For more information contact Coravin Customer Service.
Coravin Capsules are pressurized and should be stored between -22° and 149°F (-30° to +65°C). Coravin Capsules contain gas under pressure, and may explode if heated. Store in a well-ventilated place, and out of direct sunlight.
Coravin Capsules are made of recyclable materials. EMPTY Capsules can be recycled according to local regulations. DO NOT dispose of unused Capsules.
We have a needle to support many different situations. Please refer to this helpful chart for the detail regarding each needle.
Please check the bottom of your needle – where it inserts into the cork. It is time to replace the Needle when the non-stick coating begins to wear off and the Needle starts to appear silver in color.
When not in use, the best way to store extra needles is in the packaging they came in. If you purchased an extra single needle, store it in the clear tube it came in. If you purchased the Needle Kit, keep it in the box. If you have the Coravin Pedestal Base you can store your needles in the drawer of the base. Taking care of your extra needles will keep them in the best shape, ready to be used to access wine.
For wines that need to ”breathe”, using the Coravin System together with the Coravin Aerator instantaneously aerates your wine, equivalent to decanting for 60-90 minutes.
Simply push the Aerator on to the Spout of the Coravin System. Ensure it is tightly attached. Then, use your Coravin System as you normally would.
Yes, the current version of the Aerator works with all Coravin Wine Preservation Systems .Please note that early versions of the Aerator may not work with the Model Eleven. To ensure compatibility please use the one that came with your Model Eleven package.
Simply run clean, warm water through the Aerator and allow it to air dry.
Please follow these helpful tips:
- Clean the Aerator regularly
- Never use the Vintage Needle.
- Press the Trigger for a little longer for the optimal stream.
- The less wine in the bottle the more gas needed for a steady stream.
The Coravin Screw Cap expands the possibilities of the Coravin Wine Preservation System by allowing people to pour and protect wines closed with a screw cap for up to 3 months. Includes six standard size screw caps.
When the Coravin System together with a Screw Cap is used correctly, wine will keep up to 3 months. Ensure proper storage of the wine while using Coravin Screw Caps.
Screw cap bottles come in a variety of sizes and Coravin Screw Caps accommodate most. The majority of bottles use the Standard Size while a very small percentage use the Large Size.
Each Cap allows for about 50 pours before needing to be replaced. The Cap can be used from bottle to bottle.
We recommend cleaning the Screw Cap between bottles. Please click here for helpful guidance.

Over time, if your Coravin System becomes difficult to push through the closure, the coating on the needle may be worn. Inspect the tip to look for wear or damage. If the non-stick coating has worn off, leaving a silver color rather than black, you may need a new needle. Replacement needles can be ordered here.
There are several items to check if you are having trouble pouring wine. Remove the Coravin System from the bottle and give the trigger a quick press. If you hear gas escaping, then you have gas and the needle is clear — the problem is likely that the Coravin System was not fully seated on the bottle and the needle had not penetrated the closure.
If you do NOT hear gas escaping after a quick press of the trigger, you may simply be out of gas, or your needle may be clogged with some cork particles. To check for a clogged needle, unscrew the needle from the Coravin System and then try a quick press of the trigger again. If you hear gas flow, then it is likely that your needle is clogged by some small cork particles. Please refer to Clearing a Clogged Needle or click here to watch our instructional video.
If you do NOT hear gas with the needle removed, then you are likely out of gas and need a new Coravin Capsule.
If none of these remedies work, please contact Customer Service at email@example.com or 1 (855) 692-6728 for assistance.
Make sure that the bottle is tilted so that the spout is lower than the bottle's base, and that the needle tip in the bottle is always submerged in wine. If the needle tip is not submerged, a mix of argon and wine will flow out of the bottle causing excessive foam. For the optimal pour, pour along the inside edge of the glass, as this reduces splash and bubbles in the wine.
When you are done pouring and tilt the bottle back upright, the inside of the bottle goes from high to low pressure which can create a cloud that will quickly dissipate. This is normal and does not affect the remaining wine.
1. A loose needle could cause some leaking or dripping while pouring. Please ensure that the needle is tightly attached to the Coravin unit. You can check this by turning the needle grip counter-clockwise until there is no more give to the turn.
2. If you have previously accessed the bottle the most likely reason that a cork will leak is that you have used the Coravin System with a synthetic closure. Although this will not damage the Coravin Needle, and will still allow you to pour wine, the cork will not reseal, and oxidation will occur over time. If you have accessed a bottle with a synthetic closure, store it upright.
3. If you are accessing a bottle with a natural cork that is below room temperature or chilled, the cork will take a bit longer to reseal. This does not mean that oxygen is entering the bottle during the resealing process, the argon in the bottle is still protecting your wine.
4. It is possible that a small amount of residual wine in the Coravin Needle pooled in between the cork and the foil upon removal of the Coravin System from the bottle. This excess wine can sometimes leak from underneath the foil even though the cork has fully resealed.
5. If you access a bottle with a natural cork in poor condition, it is possible that it will not reseal fully and leak.
Please ensure that you are tightening the capsule cup as quickly and firmly onto the unit as it can be; there should be no more give left to the cup. If the cup is not twisted on tightly enough, it may not seal fully, allowing argon gas to escape from the Coravin System.
Also, be sure that you use only enough gas for the pour that you want. If, when you finish your pour and bring the bottle back to an upright position, you hear a long release of gas then you may have used too much gas for the pour that you want; the gas just releases into the air and is wasted. At the end of your pour you should hear only a slight “psst” of gas if you hear anything at all. We recommend using several short presses of the trigger to control your pour and optimize your gas.
This is the result of residual wine from the needle and the needle path in the cork that settles to the top of the cork and will cause some dripping. It is a normal circumstance. If you notice a steady stream of wine however that is an indication that the wine is bottled with a synthetic cork that will not reseal.
